Consumer Information Obligations (CIO)

CIOs

Consumer Information Obligations were incorporated into the PRO Regulations in 1999. Their purpose is to inform consumers about how and where to recycle packaging with the aim of reducing household waste. If, as a producer, you sell to end users, CIOs affect you.
As a packaging compliance scheme TaGPack must provide information to consumers to fulfil its CIOs. This means in turn that all members of TaGPack have fulfilled some of their CIOs simply by being members.

Meeting the CIO requirement

You can inform consumers about how and where to recycle packaging in two main ways:
  • Print information on the packaging
  • Publish information in other places
Printing information on the packaging itself is mandatory in terms of its composition (see packaging symbols). You may include too, information about where to recycle  You could include this website address so that your consumers can find their nearest recycling centre, and advise that they can telephone the Recycling Officer at their local council for details of local reprocessors or council recycling schemes.
Other places to publish this information could include:
  • Your company website
  • Press advertisements
Additional information for your consumers is available on "The Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment" website and for further information on work being carried out with consumers the WRAP website is helpful.

As well as fulfilling your legal obligations, remember that any recycling information you publish demonstrates to your consumers your commitment to the environment.  We believe that reducing carbon footprints and sustainability are now universally necessary business considerations.  For more information about recycling for businesses, click here.
