Packaging symbols

There are many different recycling symbols.  A list of the main packaging symbols is below:

Cardboard

This symbol, called the Mobius Loop is commonly found on cardboard packaging and identifies that the packaging is recyclable.

Consumer Information Obligations (CIO)

CIOs

Consumer Information Obligations were incorporated into the PRO Regulations in 1999. Their purpose is to inform consumers about how and where to recycle packaging with the aim of reducing household waste. If, as a producer, you sell to end users, CIOs affect you.
As a packaging compliance scheme TaGPack must provide information to consumers to fulfil its CIOs. This means in turn that all members of TaGPack have fulfilled some of their CIOs simply by being members.

Meeting the CIO requirement

You can inform consumers about how and where to recycle packaging in two main ways:
  • Print information on the packaging
  • Publish information in other places
Printing information on the packaging itself is mandatory in terms of its composition (see packaging symbols). You may include too, information about where to recycle  You could include this website address so that your consumers can find their nearest recycling centre, and advise that they can telephone the Recycling Officer at their local council for details of local reprocessors or council recycling schemes.
Other places to publish this information could include:
  • Your company website
  • Press advertisements
Additional information for your consumers is available on "The Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment" website and for further information on work being carried out with consumers the WRAP website is helpful.

Packaging Fines

Since the regulations became a statuatory requirement, the Environment Agency has successfully prosecuted a number of companies who have not fulfilled their obligations.  Here are some examples - (make sure you don't appear on this page!)

10 May 2004      xxxxxxxxxx fined £75,000

Popular Italian-style restaurant chain xxxxxxxxx was hit with a £75,000 fine today (10 May) after appearing for sentencing at Isleworth Crown Court for failing to recover and recycle an estimated total of 1,676 tonnes of packaging waste for the year 2002.

Latest packaging legislation

Although "The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007" form what we call "the regulations", all the following packaging legislation is relevant to the area of packaging waste and compliance:
